Reading gains
Teachers assess each child's reading level before they start DigiSmart and again at the end of the DigiSmart year.
The following represents the most recent annual data relating to reading gains, for the academic year 2010/11:
Reading — Baseline and Final National Curriculum Levels
62% of the selected children began DigiSmart below the expected national reading level for Year 5 (they were reading at or below level 3c).
By the end of Year 5, 92% were reading within the national expected range (level 3b and above), with 55% working at level 4 or above (which is the national expected attainment for the end of Year 6).
The graph below illustrates the shift in children’s reading attainment from start to finish:

The above data is based on a sample of 144 children in 2010/11.
Attainment gains in reading 2002–11
By analysing the baseline and final assessments for each child we track the attainment gain each child makes.
Since the start of the project in 2002, 48% of children have improved their reading by a full National Curriculum (NC) level or more during the year they were involved in DigiSmart. Our reading assessments are measured by NC points where 1 level is divided into 3 points.
The chart below shows the distance travelled by children in terms of improved attainment:

The above data is based on a sample of 1086 children from 2002–2011.
