Assessment for learning

Intrinsic to DigiSmart is built-in Assessment for Learning which includes:

  • explicit targets for each session
  • pupil self-assessment negotiated with tutors
  • formative record of progress to aid review and reflection
  • regular peer evaluation
  • summative assessments

Throughout the programme we encourage children to evaluate their own learning and progress, using the weekly session targets. They do this in negotiation with a DigiSmart tutor.

This ongoing assessment provides a formative measure of progress which tutors use to inform the level and type of support provided to each individual child.

Summative assessments are made by Lead Tutors against the DigiSmart criteria and in relation to National Curriculum levels. Assessment data about the children and their performance levels is collected at the start of the project and the end in order to measure the distance travelled by each child.

We have a great deal of feedback from schools involved in the project saying that the DigiSmart assessment process has proved to be extremely motivating and empowering for children.

“DigiSmart has made me more confident. I feel better about computers and better about all my school work. It helped me to do better in my SATs — I went up a whole level in reading.”

“The children’s engagement with the self-assessment process is very important. They have real time to reflect on their learning, more so than in the classroom. Through 1:1 negotiated assessment, they learn to accurately evaluate their achievements … they love this!”
